Flash Ecard Tutorial – Drawing Characters and Props

Paul Solomons has been kind enough to share a few tricks of the trade. He has compiled an excellent post on drawing characters and props on Flash. Perhaps this will give you an insight into Daftoons amazing creations. Thanks Paul for sharing this! We are sure our visualizers will enjoy reading and learning from it!

Paul writes, “As a regular contributor to 123Greetings Studio, I thought it might be nice to share a few tips and tricks and take you through the process of designing a Flash animated ecard. Of course, as with lots of things in life, there are many routes to the same destination, so what follows is by no means the only way to approach your Flash ecard project, but rather, it shows the way that I tend to work.

I thought it might be fun to look at my “To You We Sing Happy Birthday” ecard. It features lots of bits and pieces that you might have in your project.

Of course, before you start you must come up with an idea and if necessary, write a script. You might then wish to draw a storyboard – a handful of sketches that help you to visualise the action in your ecard.

So, let’s get started. Open up Flash (Fig. 02) and make sure that you use 123 Greetings’ preferred settings. Your project should be no larger than 550 x 500 pixels (I tend to use the default 550 x 400px) and your frame rate should preferably be 12 frames per second. In more recent versions of Flash, the default setting is 24 fps, so be sure to change this either in the Properties area or by clicking Modify > Document and making the change there. 12 fps doesn’t sound very fast compared to the 24 fps default, but when you consider that although 2D cinema movies tend to be animated at 24 fps, much of the action uses “twos”, with each picture being held for 2 frames, effectively making the frame rate 12 fps. If it’s good enough for Disney, it’s good enough for me.

The other setting you will want to be sure matches 123 Greetings’ requirements is your Actionscript version. It should be set to Actionscript 2. You can choose this option when you first set up your document, or you can alter it using the “Script” drop down menu in the Properties section.

    Flash
    Fig .02

You’re now faced with 4 main areas.

    1. A blank stage area (the white rectangle). This is where your action takes place.

    2. A timeline. This is where you can alter the action over time.

    3. Your tools. Everything you need to create a masterpiece.

    4. The Properties area. Here you can make all manner of changes to your project and its elements.

You can draw objects on to the stage using any number of tools. Some people like to draw using the pencil or brush tools, but I tend to favour pulling shapes around to build up my characters. Let’s look at Turple the Purple Turtle from my eCard.

    Drawing a Character
    Fig .03

As you can see (Fig. 03) he’s actually made up of lots of individual parts or “symbols” as they are known in Flash. One of the advantages of using Flash for web animation is that when you create a symbol, it is added to that project’s library, allowing you to reuse it (as I have done for Turple’s legs, arms, eyes, pupils, etc.). Reusing symbols is great because it hardly adds to the overall size of your file. Keeping file sizes down is really important for web animation.

Let’s look at how an arm is created starting with a simple rectangle. Firstly, choose a stroke and fill color by clicking on the colored squares in your toolbox. This should reveal a palette with an eyedropper to pick the color. Next, select the rectangle tool, click on the stage and drag out a rectangle shape.

See Fig. 04 to see how to turn your rectangle into the arm.

    Drawing Tips
    Fig .04

Believe it or not, every single part of Turple, all of the other characters and even the background and props were created using this technique.

    Convert to Symbol
    Fig .05

Once you have completed pulling the arm into shape, you need to convert it to a symbol (Fig.05).

Simply select the object (you can double-click on it, click and drag around it, or click on the keyframe in the timeline represented by a little black circle). Be sure to select the stroke and the fill. It’s very easy to leave one or the other behind. Once selected, click Modify > Convert to Symbol and name your symbol (in this case TurpleArm01). Next, select either “Graphic” or “Movie Clip” from the drop-down menu. Either will work, but they both behave very differently. Needless to say, you don’t really want to choose ”Button”, even though it would also do the job. I would tend to favour “Graphic” for reasons I will go into in the next tutorial. It should serve you very well. Click OK and you will see a blue rectangle around your arm (or rather Turple’s arm). This signifies that the object is now a symbol and ready to be animated. If you open the library (the books icon near the Properties area), you’ll see that the symbol is also showing in there. If you wanted to, you could drag multiple “instances” of your symbol from the library on to the stage.

Returning to your symbol on the stage you will notice that you can no longer pull around the corners and edges. Actually, you can easily edit the symbol by double-clicking on it either on the stage, or in the library. This takes you inside the symbol and you can pull it around and reshape it just as you did before. Bear in mind though, that if you alter the symbol from within, it will similarly alter every instance of that symbol in your project.

    Rotating an Object
    Fig . 06

By default, when you turn an object into a symbol, it is given a pivot point in the centre. This means that if you were to scale the object, it would scale from that central point. More importantly, if you rotate the object, it will rotate around that point too – not ideal in the case of an arm. If you want Turple’s arm to swing, it must rotate around the shoulder.

To remedy this, click on the Free Transform Tool (Fig. 06) and select the arm. You will see the pivot point revealed as a small white circle in the centre of the object. Simply click on the circle and drag it to where you want. In this case I’ve moved it to the top, where the shoulder might be. Now you’re ready to create the other parts of your character. Be sure to save each one as a separate symbol and to name them so that you can easily identify them.

Have fun creating your ecard characters and props.”

  • Tips to Make Great Holiday Ecards – Part 3

Tips to Make Great Holiday Ecards – Part 3

We have discussed the importance of research and messages in ecards, now to make it visually appealing we need to make the best use of visual elements such as:-

    Colors

Colors have a deep psychological effect on our minds. Hence it’s important to use the right color effects for better impact.

Eg- The colors for Christmas are – Red, Green and Gold.

    • Red is the color of Holly berries, which is said to represent the blood of Jesus when he died on the cross. Also the color of Santa’s dress can’t be overruled.
    • Gold is the color of the Sun and light – both are very important in the dark winter.
    • Green is the color of “The Christmas tree”, the most important element of Christmas.

    Design

It is important to include the symbolic holiday elements. Hence it is important to understand the ethos and essence of the holiday.

Eg- Design elements for Christmas: Christmas tree, Santa, Christmas presents. Use can use cultural specific elements such as Mistletoes, Christmas bells, etc.
Winter: You can explore the concept of Winter Wonderland and use visual elements such as winter carnivals, snow, snowman, etc.
Season’s Greetings: You could paint a picture of a cheerful winter and can include decorated Christmas trees.
New Year: Fireworks are important celebratory elements and can be used in cards. The clock is also significant to show the countdown to the New Year.

    Realistic Animation Vs Non-realistic Animation

You can either use a photographic Christmas tree image or create a vector image. Both visuals will have different impact and hence should be used based on the concept and core theme of the ecard. If the card is meant to be funny and cute and have a cartoon feel to it then it is preferred to use a vector image. On the other hand if the card is meant to give a realistic feel you should use a photographic image.

There are certain cards in which the theme revolves around character animation and hence vector images are ideal to use. For example if the card is meant to show a teddy couple walking across the grass then the grass should be a vector image and not a photographic image.

    Fonts

Fonts need to be selected based on the theme and feel of the card. If a card is meant for a religious section such as Christmas blessings, the text needs to be prominent as it is usually a spiritual quote or extracts from the Bible, hence hand-written or cursive fonts should be avoided. The letters in these fonts are more decorative rather than prominent and hence does not serve the purpose of the card. On the contrary if a card is meant for New Year love section then a decorative or cursive font can be used. If you choose to make a cartoonish Merry Christmas card then a funky font can be used. Presentation of fonts is also important so alignment, legibility, font effects must be checked and modified to suit the card.

Another important point to note is that images should never be blurred or pixilated. It kills the look of the card and hence good and clear quality visuals are always preferred.

  • Tips To Make Great Holiday Ecards – Part 2

Tips To Make Great Holiday Ecards – Part 2

We discussed in our last post that a successful ecard is dependent on great visuals and an apt text.
It is vital to nail the message in an ecard. After all it reflects to the recipient what the user has conveyed.

Hence while writing messages keep the below pointers in mind:-

    1) Identify the Sender and the Receiver

This defines the type of message that the card should include. The tone in an ecard message will differ for different relationships. When you design your ecard identify the audience you wish to target. If the card is intended to send to a friend then the language of the ecard can vary from casual to fun, whereas if it is meant for a parent it can reflect tones of respect, love and gratitude.

A classic example is Season’s Greetings ecards. While an ecard to a friend or family member includes wishes for joy, happiness and love business greetings would include formal wishes for a prosperous and successful new year.

Below is an example of an in-house Season’s Greetings> Business Greetings ecard and a Season’s Greetings> From Our Home To Yours ecard by Ashupatodia.

    Season's Greetings Ecards
This is one of the reasons why 123Greetings.com offers various sub-categories. Uploading cards in specific sub-categories help cater to the target audience and thus appeal to the right group of people looking for specific content.

    2) Identify the Emotion of the Sender

This will vary for different occasions. So the message should differ for Thanksgiving cards as opposed to New Year cards. The emotion on Thanksgiving would be to express gratitude to God, friends and family and to cherish all that you have. While for New Year the emotion will be to spread happiness and wishes for a brighter future. Hence the message must beautifully express these emotions. The card should be able to translate the user’s thoughts into words. This is especially important for Love ecards.

    3) Use of Quotations

It is a great idea to use popular quotations in ecards to provoke a thought. However quotes should not be mistaken as wishes. They should lead the user to express more. Hence any quote must be followed by a personalized message. A quote must also mention the name of the author. Moreover only popular quotes or quotes by famous people should be used so to avoid ambiguity about the author’s credentials. After all a quote will only have an impact if it is said by someone who is widely appreciated and followed.

    4) Audiences Connect to a Message woven in a Storyline

The message must engage the recipient. It should be charming and capable of kindling emotions. The recipient will always connect the message to the sender’s intentions and hence it must be beautifully displayed. Messages woven in storylines work best for ecards. For example a Christmas card, sending out wishes for a cheerful and merry Christmas can be laid around the storyline of Santa dropping presents and cheering people. Similarly, a Christmas message meant for family can be woven around a cozy house with family get-togethers.

More than writing skills, it is important to have an emotional quotient to understand user needs and provide for the same. Next week we’ll talk about visuals so keep reading!

  • Tips to Make Great Holiday Ecards – Part 1

Tips to Make Great Holiday Ecards – Part 1

It’s that time of the year again, cold and dark, yet it’s far from gloomy. It’s the holiday season! Winter has set in but the beautiful lit houses and festivity in the crisp air brings forward a cheerful and fun season. It is surely a busy time with family reunions starting from Thanksgiving and a busy travel period ending post New Year. In between there are celebratory occasions almost everyday.

Advent marks the beginning of Christmas and till then it has events such as St. Nicholas Day, Christmas Card Day, Christmas Tree Light Day and many more. Now how do you prepare for such a busy season?

    Happy Holidays ecard by Universelover
    Happy Holidays ecard by Universelover

We’ll cover in details one of the important criteria of making great ecards in this blog and cover the rest in the following weeks. To start off with the most important:-

    1) Research

While doing your research the key questions to answer are:
How is the Holiday season celebrated in different parts of North America?
    • What are the religious beliefs surrounding the festivals?
    • What type of food is most popularly associated with the event?
    • What is the latest trend with respect to the holiday?

Here is some quick information about upcoming holidays:
Thanksgiving was founded as a religious observance for all the members of the community to give thanks to God for a common purpose. For Thanksgiving, people indulge in family get-togethers with the main food being Turkey, charity to the poor (lot of communities have annual food drives), family reunions as people living away travel to be with family during this time. It is also important to note that Since 1924, in New York City, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is held annually every Thanksgiving Day.

Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day that sees scores of shoppers trying to make the best use of the fabulous deals available in stores. It also marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

Winter in North America means a lot of snow in most parts and frozen lakes. Thus it is a perfect time for winter carnivals and ice skating on the lake. Christmas is marked by attending church services, decorating homes with Christmas trees and exchanging greetings and gifts with family and friends. Of course Santa plays an important role on Christmas as no Christmas tale is complete without Santa and his bag of goodies.

This card gives a perfect view of what the holiday season looks like in North America

All these elements can be reflected in a card to make it beautiful. Users must be transformed to another cheerful land with pleasant visuals and feel the holiday spirit. But what makes a card likeable is the perfect combination of visuals and messages. We will talk more in details about card messages next week. So stay tuned!

  • Thanksgiving Tips And Popular Ecards

    Thanksgiving Tips And Popular Ecards

Like all other holidays it is important to have the specific elements in a card and the tricks, as mentioned before in this blog, lie in research, card copy/ message, design, colors and music.

Thanksgiving has a long history behind its existence as a holiday. Dating back to the time when pilgrims first shared food with Native Americans to hundreds of years later when it was officially declared as a holiday by George Washington. Thanksgiving essentially is a day to give thanks for a great harvest season and celebrate this with friends and family. It is a day when people thank the Lord for all that he has bestowed on them and for a healthy and happy family. Since it is a day spent with family, food automatically becomes an important ritual as no family get-together is complete without a lavish meal!

Do remember, that it is important to understand the history so you are familiar with the holiday and understand its roots where the essence really lies. However, it is equally important to understand how the holiday is currently celebrated and what Thanksgiving elements are trending. A simple online search will show you that shopping for the holiday season and Thanksgiving recipes are the most searched topics. It isn’t always necessary that you can incorporate all trending topics and translate them in ecards. In this case what you can incorporate is the Thanksgiving dinner with all its core components. A little research into what the dinner comprises of will reveal ingredients such as turkey, pumpkin, potato pie etc. Turkey can aslo be used as the ‘fun’ element in an ecard as can be seen in our Turkey Fun sub-category. Thanksgiving parades which are a huge affair in USA are also very popular.

    Other things to note are:-
Colors: Orange, brown, yellow and red or Fall colors represent Thanksgiving!
Emotions: Gratitude, humility, love are key emotions that people want to express in their wishes to one another.
Music: Rhythmic tunes, country music will help set the mood!
Message: These vary from traditional to contemporary and both are widely used depending on the demographics of the users. Example of a traditional message would be – thanks to the Lord for a great harvest season. On the other hand contemporary will be – Thanks to family and friends and sharing the excitement of the holiday.

  • Fun Facts and Popular Halloween Ecards

Fun Facts and Popular Halloween Ecards

Halloween originated in Ireland but is now celebrated across the world, especially in USA and Canada. Halloween is associated with everything spooky. It is a day when dead spirits are believed to pay visits to people’s homes. Halloween was born as a fusion of various cultural beliefs and traditions. In modern age kids dress up in costumes and go trick or treating. Halloween, however, is not a children’s holiday. It is considered as the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas in USA. Consumer spending on Halloween has substantially increased over the years as people spend elaborately on decorations, candies and costumes. Halloween parties are ever so popular and Jack-o’-lanterns and candy corn remain essential celebratory elements.

For ecards it is important to pack up all these elements and allow users to enjoy the holiday virtually. Halloween is one of the most popular card-sending holidays on 123Greetings.com. USA contributes to over 65% of the total Halloween card sends from the website. Happy Halloween and Haunted House are the most popular sub-categories. Other sub-categories receive more targeted views and hence receive high sends. Hence it is important that cards are uploaded in the relevant sub-categories.

Our users have loved the cards created by 123Greetings Studio visualizers that have elevated the ecard viewing experience. The most popular Studio Halloween card since last year is the Magical Halloween’ ecard by Simpydesigns. It has a send/ view ratio of a stunning 59%!

    Halloween ecard by Simpydesigns
    Halloween ecard by Simpydesigns

When asked about the concept of her ecard, Simpydesigns says, “to maintain the essence of the holiday, I wanted to make the card magical and a bit nostalgic. I animated the house to be lit up and decorated it with Halloween elements all around. It is also important to heighten the thrill of the card by adding suitable music. 123Greetings.com already has many amazing cards with scary music, so I deliberately added a musical tune in the card. I used a lullaby from a music box to make it sleepy yet magical.”

Some other helpful information for Halloween ecards:

    • Orange and black are considered Halloween colors because orange is associated with the fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death.
    • The owl is a popular Halloween image.
    • Witches on broomstick, scary carved pumpkins called jack-o’-lanterns, ghosts and black cats are closely associated with Halloween.
    • Costume parties are also very popular in the US and hence scary characters such as vampires have become a part of this frightening holiday.

With a wide choice of elements to choose from and some creative skills any card can be made fun and scary! So happy haunting!

  • Ecards For Upcoming Events

    Ecards For Upcoming Events

October marks the beginning of the festive period. It starts with the Canadian Thanksgiving and then sees Halloween which is one of the biggest commercial holidays in the US. Halloween then paves way for colder weather which brings in Thanksgiving, one of the biggest American holidays, and before you realize it’s almost Christmas and Season’s Greetings are being rapidly exchanged. It sure does get busy!

However festivity is not only limited to the western part of the World. October will be a month of lights and celebrations in India as it celebrates one of its biggest festivals of the year, ‘Diwali’.

October also gets busy at 123Greetings.com as users get engrossed in card-sending. 65% of all cards sent for Halloween originate from USA. Virtual monsters and spooky witches spread horror on the website. But the horror is not limited to Halloween. There is another frightening day that is celebrated on October 16, for another kind of evil (just kidding!). It is Boss’s Day! Based on 123Greetings.com’s internal data Americans love their bosses more than people from other geographies as over 88% of the total cards sent on Boss’s Day are from USA. Well isn’t that sweet? No, not enough because just two days later is Sweetest Day, on October 18, for all things sweet. Love tops the charts for this holiday, as it is after all, the first sweet thing that comes to mind.

Diwali despite being an Indian event does have a fair send-ability from USA owing to the large Indian population residing there. Moreover we think it is an important holiday as it sees a huge card-sending from a country that is popular for its arts and traditions. This is a great opportunity to showcase your diverse talent to the world, where you are not restricted by geography, and build a global fan following.

    Upcoming Events in October
    Upcoming Events in October

So to ensure that you’re on track to have fun on 123Greetings Studio, this is what you should do:-

    1) Plan early
    2) Research on holidays
    3) Get the card elements right – there is huge diversity in these events so your cards must cater to the target audience’ tastes.
    4) Upload in different sub-categories – Yes there is an opportunity to spook people with flying witches but guess what, they fit better in the witches sub-category and not necessarily Happy Halloween. Similarly Halloween candies are better suited for Trick-or Treat and if you are an expert at crafting pumpkins Jack-o’-Lantern is your best bet.
    5) Upload cards 30 days in advance – Yes no matter what you think but this is the ideal time for your cards to perform and mature on the website. Cramming in cards last minute won’t help!
    6) Sit back, relax and let the users do all the talking!

So this month will be dedicated to these fun events and we’ll keep you posted with fun facts, guidelines and popular cards for these upcoming events. So stay tuned!
